Acknowledgement"" is a historical approach to the music and life of John Coltrane. It includes interviews from other jazz musicians who played with him.It has a detailed analysis of each of the Coltrane Tenor solos ""Two Bass Hit,"" ""Ruby My Dear"" and ""Acknowledgement."" The latter has a special feature called The Inverted Fourth Principle. It was used exclusively in Coltrane's ""avante-garde"" music. Nothing is said of The Inverted Fourth in any other jazz publication that I know. The book is a very exciting and informative read for anyone. Especially the jazz enthusiast.

Grey's doctoral dissertation proves that PhDs are too easy to buy today. The writing and organization is sophomoric at best (average high school level). Highly opinionated (without any supporting facts and/or a logical presentation of such) and void of any educated exchanges of ideas, "Dr." Grey begins by a vicious attack upon other Coltrane biographers to justify his ramblings in pursuit of his letters. Grey simply uses Coltrane as an excuse to vent his racist anger pent up in a time warp from his socialist activities in the 60's. He is blinded by color -missing by light years the message Trane worked so hard to express. Coltrane would not be pleased. He rejected both underlying themes here - anger and racism. I see why this is a "self" published book. If you are a lover and fan of Coltrane -as I am - you will do much better by seeking truth and knowledge elsewhere.Product details

As an aspiring Coltrane scholar I found Dr. Grey's text riveting. Not only was his content original in approach and product, but also gave a lot of insight on Coltrane through the eyes of his peers. His musical analysis of Coltrane's "Inverted Fourth Principle" and use of interview content were highlights. Very concise writing and just overall a good read.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT A John Coltrane Legacy challenges the critics of John Coltrane's "Avant Garde" music of the 1960's.Those who are close followers of Coltrane are familiar with or know of the several Coltrane biographies already in existence. Ethnomusicologist De Sayles Grey, PhD., adds an interesting spin to the existing body of work related to the life and music of John Coltrane.
In Dr. Grey's discussion of published biographies, he overlooked one important work by Lewis Porter. John Coltrane; His Life and His Music,
U. Michigan Press 1998. The reason I mentioned this particular book is because it does contain extensive analysis by Lewis Porter who is a Musicologist. But, because of Dr. Grey's interviews with key musicians with whom Coltrane performed, studied and shared with, he has a system that informs his analysis that has not been mentioned in any of the previous biographies. One particular interviewee, Hassaan Ibn Ali, shared Harmonic and Philosophical ideas with Coltrane.
The system that Dr. Grey brings to our attention is the "Inverted Fourth Principle" which I find very interesting. The legendary Hessaan Ibn Ali taught the Inverted Fourth System to Coltrane. This principle helps us bring order to Coltrane's Work during the 1960's. The Inverted Fourth Principle begins to address some questions that I've had about Coltrane's thinking when he was improvising or embellishing. Many players and historians have referred to this particular aspect of his playing as being Pentatonic or gapped Pentatonic scales. The Inverted Fourth method sounds as if it could actually be the way Coltrane was thinking when playing these groups of fourth and major second combinations that sound like pentatonic scale extracts. However, there are a few places where Dr. Grey's application of the principle could be analyzed as scale abstracts common to the 1960's period. But differing opinions are always a possibility when we are trying to place a person's improvisation within a system of thought we assume they are using at any given moment.
In the section conflicting social ideologies Dr. Grey brings out some interesting facts related to social barriers that affect the critic's ability to accurately address and evaluate Coltrane's music. He also gives us a brief history of the evolving Afrcan-American and his music. Dr. Grey acquaints us with the historical background of some of the religious groups including Black Christians that questioned the morality of early Jazz and the existence of a Black hierarchy. This section introduces a discussion about the many fronts Blacks have had to fight on for their survival in America. These various forms of institutional racism have to be discussed in order to thoroughly understand Black music. In some of Dr. Grey's passionate discussions concerning religion and racism, he suggest that these groups or organizations that throughout the years have denigrated Black music as an inferior music coming from an inferior people are not as pure, righteous or superior as they would have you believe.
Acknowledgement A John Coltrane Legacy challenges some of the conventional ideas concerning John Coltrane's music and confirms others. It is definitely worth the reading and should be a part of your Coltrane library.

His is a book about Trane's playing rather than an autobiography which is why I rated it 4 stars. He knows a lot about Trane but I have studied Trane at least as much as him (at least by transcribing) and I find him not always correct. Much is correct though and I think the book has been a help to me in understanding some things. Most transcriptions of Trane are wrong but mine I play note for note with him and I understand more and more by doing this. Trane - always unbelievable and my favorite sax-player dead or alive.
